Minute for Mission: June 8, 2014

First Presbyterian Church
Minute for Mission
June 8, 2014

On behalf of the Heritage, Heart and Hope Capital Campaign, I am pleased to report to you that pledges from members of our congregation to support the church’s proposed renovation project are almost $1,600,000 of our goal of $2,000,000.  This means that we only need to raise $400,000 more in pledges to reach our goal.  It also means that, unless we raise the additional money, we will not be taking full advantage of the wonderful 4-to-1 match from the McMurry Memorial Fund.  We cannot afford to let this opportunity go by.  Let’s all work together to reach our goal – we’re very close at 79%.

Another goal of our committee is to have all of our members participating, regardless of the size of the pledge or gift.  Throughout the history of First Presbyterian Church, members have always come through when they see how their contributions can make a difference.  We raised the money for our Fellowship Hall and parking structure in the 1980s, our members made it possible to renovate portions of the building including the James Park Classroom, the library and children’s area.  This was in the 1990s.  More recently, members helped pay for the organ in the chapel.  Every gift and pledge is important.  We want all members to join in helping First Presbyterian Church continue its many ministries and its mission of serving Christ in the heart of Knoxville even more effectively far into the future.

Nearly half of the estimated total cost of construction in this project is for things you won’t even see such as plumbing and electrical upgrades, but what you will see will be wonderful improvements:

  • A redesigned nursery area
  • A secure children’s outdoor play area
  • An outdoor gathering space for all ages
  • New elevators with access to all floors
  • A wonderful central atrium connecting several areas of our church
  • A new media center and library
  • Several new multi-purpose rooms
  • A redesigned youth area
  • An outdoor columbarium and reflection space
  • And many more improvements to our wonderful old church

The Building Vision Team and our architects are working closely with leaders of both the children’s and youth programs to design the best possible spaces for our children and youth.

For this renovation project to become a reality, everyone’s help is needed.  Please prayerfully consider making a pledge or gift.  Every $100 becomes $500.  You have THREE YEARS to pay your pledge.  Please take advantage of this unique opportunity to participate in the future of our church.

May Jesus Christ be at the heart of every decision we make about how we spend our resources of time and spiritual gifts.  And, may God lead us to dedicate a portion of the material wealth so generously given to us in thankful response back to God.
