Exploring the Jewish Roots of Jesus: A Weekend of Insight and Engagement with Dr. Amy Jill Levine

What a gift it was to have Dr. Amy-Jill Levine with us this past weekend! On Friday, April 4, she gathered area clergy for a thoughtful and timely conversation about how to avoid Antisemitism in preaching—a deeply important and much-needed dialogue.

On Saturday, she offered a wonderful children’s presentation, making a personal connection with each child there. She took the time to write their names in the books she gave them and had a brief conversation with each one—a simple but powerful act that made every child feel seen and valued.

That evening, nearly 400 attendees joined us in the Sanctuary for Dr. Levine’s public lecture titled "Jesus and Judaism: The Connection Matters." Drawing from her academic work, Dr. Levine spoke about the historical and theological connections between Jesus and Judaism, offering context that deepens understanding of the biblical narrative.

A reception followed the lecture, allowing participants time to connect and reflect on the presentation. On Sunday, Dr. Levine led a Sunday School session in the chapel and gave a meditation during our 11:00 a.m. service.

We are grateful for the many hands that made this weekend possible. Special thanks to the Pettway Committee, Presbyterian Women, our church staff, and the many volunteers who gave their time and energy with such care. Your hospitality and dedication helped make this weekend a success for our entire community.
