Gathering Again: The Flower Guild's Return to Fellowship and Learning in the Pandemic

One of the Flower Guild's most cherished traditions is its annual educational workshop, typically held each fall for both current members and those interested in learning more about floral design for worship. These gatherings provide an opportunity for fellowship, inspiration, and the passing down of knowledge from one generation of arrangers to the next.

In October 2020, as the uncertainty of the pandemic began to ease, the Guild gathered for a special kickoff meeting at the Blount Mansion Visitors Center. Members enjoyed a boxed lunch and the chance to reconnect after months of disruption. The highlight of the day was a floral design presentation by longtime Guild member Nancy Kelly White.

Nancy demonstrated one of the foundational forms of church floral design, the classic symmetrical triangle arrangement. Elegant and balanced, the triangular shape displays beautifully in a worship setting and is often used to symbolize the Holy Trinity. As she worked, Nancy shared practical tips on floral selection, care, and design principles, transforming a collection of greenery and blooms into a striking arrangement. Hydrangeas, lilies, chrysanthemums, roses, and snapdragons all found their place in the design, illustrating both the artistry and intentionality behind the arrangements that grace the church each week.

Like many Guild gatherings over the years, the workshop served as more than a lesson in flower arranging. It was an opportunity to learn from one another, strengthen friendships, and continue a tradition of creating beauty in worship through faithful service.
