Building More Than Homes: Craig Wrisberg, Volunteer Coordinator, Reflects on the 2024 Habitat for Humanity Build

"Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain." Psalm 127:1

As I reflect on our 2024 Habitat for Humanity build, I am convinced that God showed up in a big way throughout this project. He was present not only in the work itself, but in the people He brought together to make it possible.

The partnership between First Presbyterian Church and Episcopal Church of the Good Samaritan, working alongside Dominique on six Saturdays, was one of the highlights of my Christian life. More than 30 FPC members volunteered, joined by several others who came through what I can only describe as divine appointments. Week after week, volunteers arrived before dawn, ready to serve.

Again and again, God proved Himself to be Jehovah Jireh, our Provider. Through generous donations, faithful prayer support, Linn Acree's wonderful meals, and the excellent guidance of Habitat for Humanity Knoxville staff, every need was met. Together, our congregations were even able to present Dominique with a Lowe's gift card to help furnish her new home.

Throughout the process I kept thinking of these words from Solomon in Proverbs which says, "The wise woman builds her house" (Proverbs 14:1). I thought of that verse often as I watched Dominique work alongside us every day we were on site. A mother of four, she never stopped smiling. Her joy, determination, and gratitude inspired everyone around her.

While we helped build the house, Dominique was building a home.

The fellowship we shared was as meaningful as the construction itself. Working alongside Larry Webb and the volunteers from Good Samaritan reminded me of the beauty of followers of Christ serving together for a common purpose.

In the end, Habitat for Humanity is about much more than lumber and nails. It is about faith put into action, neighbors serving neighbors, and God's people joining in the work He is already doing. Looking back, I am grateful that we were given the opportunity to be part of Dominique's story and to witness His faithfulness every step of the way. If you've never participated in a Habitat build, I encourage you to join us next time. You may help build a house, but you'll also help build community, relationships, and hope for a family in need.
