First Presbyterian Church Featured in the Knoxville News Sentinel for Its Historic Stained Glass and the Stories They Tell

We’re excited to share that First Presbyterian Church has been featured in the Knoxville News Sentinel for our stained glass windows and the history they hold.

As Knoxville’s oldest church, our sanctuary has been shaped over time by an impressive collection of stained glass, beginning with the construction of the current sanctuary in 1902. What started with a single memorial gift has grown into a collection representing multiple artists and studios, each window reflecting a different style, era, and expression of faith. Together, they tell a story, not only of artistry, but of the people and generations who have been part of this church.

We are especially grateful to one of our church historians, Kelly Norrell, for the time and care she gave in preparing a presentation and sharing the story behind these windows. As she said, they are “a visual manifestation” of faith, offering a way to see and reflect on the story of Christ and the life of the church through color, light, and design.

If you haven’t taken time to look closely at the windows, we encourage you to do so. Each one holds meaning, history, and a glimpse into the faith of those who came before us.
