Gathering at Montreat: A Retreat Centered on Wisdom, Connection, and Shared Life in Christ

A group from First Presbyterian Church gathered last weekend at Montreat College for our annual congregational retreat. It was a great opportunity to step away from the usual routines and spend time together in the mountains.
We began Friday evening with an intergenerational logo activity that gave people an easy way to connect and work alongside one another.

On Saturday, Rev. Dr. Christine Roy Yoder led the main program, focusing on the opening chapters of the Book of Proverbs, where wisdom is described not just as an idea, but as something active and present. Dr. Yoder also reflected on the connection between wisdom and the work of the Holy Spirit, describing wisdom as one way we experience God’s guidance and presence with us. She drew attention to the image of the Tree of Life, noting how it appears at both the beginning and the end of the biblical story, and how it serves as a reminder of the life God intends for creation. In Proverbs, wisdom is closely tied to that image, pointing toward a life that is rooted in God and marked by growth, stability, and care.

There was also time for fellowship throughout the day, including a group bingo game that brought lots of participation. Children took part in their own program, “WizKidz,” where they explored the ideas of “pause, wonder, and shine” as ways of paying attention to God’s wisdom. They also had time to enjoy the playground and the creek nearby.

We closed the weekend on Sunday morning with worship and a final session with Dr. Yoder. It was a peaceful and joyful time together at Montreat, with time for connection, learning, and reflection. Thank you to all who joined us!
