The Crucifixion of Christ: A Service of Worship and Reflection on Good Friday

On Friday, April 3, nearly 300 people gathered in the sanctuary at First Presbyterian Church in downtown Knoxville for a Good Friday service that was reverent, thoughtful, and well attended. In a year when the traditional downtown Stations of the Cross service was not held, it was powerful to see so many from across the community come together to mark the day.

The service, A Musical Meditation on the Passion of Christ, centered on The Crucifixion by John Stainer. Through a careful combination of Scripture and music, the story of Christ’s journey to the cross unfolded in a way that invited reflection without rushing the moment. It created space to consider both the weight of Good Friday and the depth of Christ’s love.

Under the direction of Scott Scheetz, the Sanctuary Choir led with energy and care, joined by members of the Church Street United Methodist Parish Choir. Soloists Tony Deaton and Dr. Josh Phelps contributed strong and expressive performances, while guest organist Katie Scheetz provided beautiful accompaniment throughout the service.

The music told the story in a compelling way, offering a clear and thoughtful path for reflection. The audience were quietly focused, listening and taking it in together.
