Andy Morgan Helps Churches Navigate AI with Faith and Care for Others
First Presbyterian is proud to celebrate the work of Rev. Dr. Andy Morgan, our Director of Faith Formation, who is helping churches thoughtfully navigate the growing influence of artificial intelligence. Andy was one of 17 leaders who gathered to envision, write and launch the new Church AI Toolkit. The ecumenical team included representatives from the PC(USA), Episcopal Church, ELCA, United Methodist Church and Church of England. The toolkit was recently introduced at the third annual AI and the Church Summit, which Andy has participated in since its inaugural year.
Andy developed the toolkit’s AI Fluency section, which gives pastors and church leaders a clear foundation for understanding AI and considering its ethical and theological implications. The resource explains unfamiliar terms in accessible language and helps leaders move from simply understanding the technology to asking an essential question: What is the faithful thing to do here? The larger toolkit also prepares pastors to respond to concerns already appearing in congregational life, including deepfakes, voice-cloning scams, AI companions and more. This project is part of Andy’s larger national and international work with churches, seminaries, mid councils and organizations including POAMN and the PC(USA) offices focused on faith formation and innovation. In 2025, he led an “AI-Powered Ministry” webinar for the PC(USA) Office of Christian Formation, exploring both the benefits and limitations of AI. His guiding conviction is that technology may assist ministry, but it cannot replace love, prayerful discernment or human relationships. Andy will share more of this important work when First Presbyterian hosts the Presbyterian Older Adult Ministries Network (POAMN) National Gathering September 15–18. He will serve as the conference keynote speaker on Thursday, September 17, from 9–10:30 am. Andy will explore the rise of artificial intelligence through the lens of Christian discipleship, looking at both the challenges AI presents, including misinformation, scams and questions of trust, and the opportunities it offers for accessibility, learning and ministry. His keynote will help church leaders consider how we can approach this rapidly changing technology with wisdom, discernment and faith.
